John Wambugu is a technology, innovation and Future Economy leader focused on helping shape Africa’s next era of economic transformation.
His work sits at the intersection of artificial intelligence, digital technology, the creative economy, entrepreneurship, digital infrastructure, public policy and the informal economy. Through strategic advisory, ecosystem building, research and thought leadership, he brings together people, ideas and partnerships to turn emerging technologies into practical economic opportunities.
His philosophy is simple: technology matters when it improves livelihoods. This principle continues to guide his work across technology, entrepreneurship, creative industries and community development.
Background
Earlier in his career, John led Business Development across Eastern Africa for Canon, contributing to programmes that supported more than 5,000 young creatives across over 20 African countries. He helped advance the adoption of imaging and digital technologies, supported initiatives including the Canon Virtual Film School, and was recognised with Canon’s Innovation Award for three consecutive years. These experiences shaped his belief that technology creates the greatest impact when it is practical, accessible and centred on people.
John is the CEO and Co-Founder of EMISHA, Africa’s Creative & Tech Growth Ecosystem, where he leads the development of a platform designed to help creative and technology professionals learn, hire and earn through access to learning, opportunities, partnerships and income.
He also serves as a Strategic Technology & Digital Economy Advisor to the Informal Economy Development Forum (IEDF), contributing to work at the intersection of technology, the informal economy and digital transformation across Africa. He also provides strategic advisory support within the Wikimedia ecosystem, including as Strategic Advisor for the Creative Economy Sector with Wikimedia User Group Kenya.
John’s entrepreneurial work also includes building technology platforms designed around the realities of African businesses and communities. One example is ZIQO, a hyperlocal platform connecting neighbourhood businesses and communities. Across these ventures, his focus is on using technology to address practical challenges, strengthen digital participation and create pathways to greater economic opportunity.
His commitment to community development led him to establish MindMe International, a nonprofit organisation focused on empowering underserved communities through innovation, technology and education. Through initiatives such as Laibu Mtaani, MindMe introduced solar-powered community libraries and technology hubs, bringing learning and digital access closer to communities.
John is also the Founding Chairperson of Smart Sacco, where he has championed community-led financial inclusion and accessible digital financial solutions. Across his work, he continues to build partnerships and initiatives that connect technology, entrepreneurship, education, creativity and economic opportunity.
His work has included collaborations and engagements involving organisations such as the United Nations, World Economic Forum and World Bank, as well as recognition through initiatives such as the Africa Future Elect Fellowship. These experiences have strengthened his commitment to future-focused leadership and to building stronger innovation and economic ecosystems across Africa.
