Technology has the power to transform economies, but its greatest impact lies in creating opportunities for people.

I am John Wambugu, a technology, innovation, and digital economy leader dedicated to building Africa's Informal & Digital Economy through technology, entrepreneurship, ecosystem development, and community-driven innovation.

Over the course of my career, I have worked across technology, business development, digital transformation, creative industries, and community development, partnering with organizations, entrepreneurs, governments, and development partners to develop practical solutions that expand opportunity, strengthen local economies, and unlock inclusive growth.

Earlier in my career, I led Business Development across Eastern Africa for Canon, where I contributed to initiatives that empowered more than 5,000 young creatives across over 20 African countries while driving the adoption of imaging and digital technologies. I also supported regional initiatives such as the Canon Virtual Film School and was recognized with Canon's Innovation Award for three consecutive years. These experiences reinforced my belief that technology delivers its greatest impact when it is practical, accessible, and centered on people.

Today, I serve as Africa Head of Technology at the Informal Economy Development Forum (IEDF), where I support technology and innovation initiatives that advance digital transformation, entrepreneurship, and economic inclusion across Africa. My work focuses on strengthening the digital foundations that enable informal businesses, entrepreneurs, creatives, and communities to participate more meaningfully in Africa's growing digital economy.

Alongside this work, I have been part of building and supporting technology platforms designed around the everyday realities of African businesses and communities. These include ZIQO, a hyperlocal digital marketplace connecting neighbourhood businesses and communities, and EMISHA, a technology and creative marketplace expanding opportunities for creatives, freelancers, businesses, and emerging talent. While each platform addresses different challenges, they share a common purpose: using technology to solve real-world problems and create more inclusive economic opportunities across Africa.

My passion for community development inspired me to establish MindMe International, a nonprofit organization focused on empowering underserved communities through innovation, technology, and education. Through initiatives such as Laibu Mtaani, we introduced solar-powered community libraries and technology hubs that brought learning, digital access, and opportunity closer to the communities that needed them most.

I also serve as the Founding Chairperson of Smart Sacco, championing financial inclusion through community-led cooperative innovation and accessible digital financial solutions. Alongside this work, I continue to contribute to Africa's technology, innovation, and creative economy ecosystems through strategic advisory, partnerships, and initiatives that encourage entrepreneurship, collaboration, and sustainable economic development.

My contribution to Africa's innovation ecosystem has led to appointments including Strategic Advisor for the Creative Economy Sector with the Wikimedia-affiliated Wikimedia User Group Kenya, as well as my selection as an Africa Future Elect Fellow. These opportunities reflect my commitment to advancing future-focused leadership and supporting the continued growth of Africa's digital, creative, and innovation ecosystems.

Over the years, my work has also been recognized through collaborations, partnerships, and initiatives involving respected organizations such as the United Nations, the World Economic Forum, and the World Bank, reflecting a shared commitment to technology, entrepreneurship, creativity, and inclusive community development.

Throughout my journey, one principle has remained constant: technology should create opportunity. Whether through digital platforms, innovation ecosystems, strategic partnerships, entrepreneurship, artificial intelligence, or community development, I remain committed to connecting innovation with real-world impact and building stronger, more inclusive economies across Africa.
